focus, baby, focus

One of my favorite scripture verses:

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2)

Really, the entire chapter can change your life!  :)

The photography business, as many of you know, is a strange business.  Competitiveness drives it in a way that seems different from many careers.  It’s not who has the most money, but who has the most talent.  Who is the most popular?  We begin as admirers and students of art, but along the way, we may loose the joy of expression and can become consumed with what the guy next door is doing.

Let me encourage you.

Jesus made us unique.  He gifted us differently.  Just like He gifted the church, (”we have different gifts, according to the grace given us.”) He has gifted you.  In order to fully enjoy the gift He has given you, embrace your uniqueness.  Your life’s journey is different from everyone else, so He has equipped you for your specific walk in life.  If we are swimmers, we are dressed to swim; if we are marathon runners, we are dressed to run.  Dress for the race you are to run.  Don’t jump into the water wearing your Nike’ tennis shoes.  If you are wearing Nike’ tennis shoes….get on the right track!  :)

Not everyone in your city will love your work.  Those who are drawn to you are who you are supposed to meet.

Don’t get focused on what the artist around the corner from you is doing.  We all have a different role.  They may be swimming, and you running.  Enjoy where God has planted you.  Focus on Jesus.

So, as you renew your mind with God’s word, His will for you will be discovered.  Focus, baby, focus!  Not on what someone else is doing, but what God is doing.  Then, you will know what you should do.

keeping down the background noise….

My hubby called me from the break room and I could hardly hear him.   The voices of his coworkers in the background pounded through the phone in jumbled conversations.  The background noise was so lound, that I was having trouble focusing on him.  It was frustrating.

I imagine that is why I sometimes have a hard time hearing what Jesus is trying to say to me.  Background noise.  The noise of life.

I meet a lot of people at exciting times in their lives…   mommys that are amazed (and maybe overwhelmed) at the splendor of a newborn, brides that are busily planning what will be one of the fondest memories of their lives….

but even lowly photographers can get swept away and exhausted by the pressures of the real world….it seems like we are “chasing after the wind” some times…..

and we can’t hear Jesus’ voice calling to us over the wildly screaming wind that we are chasing….

Today, if even for a minute, ask Jesus to quiet the noise in our lives and enjoy His presence….loving you.

“The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save.  He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”
